Meeting notes for 24 August

Wordle using the text of the article

What we read:
Pickering, G. 2009, 'Optimizing the sensory characteristics and acceptance of canned cat food: use of a human taste panel', Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, vol. 93, no. 1, pp. 52-60.

Vocabulary:
  • dogged (adj) : stubbornly persevering
  • gritty / grittiness (adj): describing the texture, as if it was covered in grit (sand / gravel)
  • palatable (adj): pleasant to taste
  • panel (n): small group of people (e.g. taste panel, interview panel)
  • paucity (n): few, scarcity
  • so-developed: developed in this way
  • viscosity (n): sticky/gluey consistency  - between a solid and liquid.

Discussion:

How to read critically:

Relevance of the study:
  • After reading the summary, we discussed whether it was useful to have a human taste panel for cat food, given that human and cat preferences probably differ.
  • After reading the introduction, we questioned the citing of sources primarily from the 1970-1980's.
  • Looking at our own experiences, we felt flavour profiles may be of some use for pet food manufacturers, but the more significant determinant of pet food purchasing behaviour may be nutritional or health characteristics.
Next week:

  • Date: 29 August
  • Time: 1- 2pm
  • Location: Room 5B in the library
