Teaser Tuesday (9th of October, 2012)

We continue in our EXPLORE theme by looking at one of the most staggeringly researched graphic novels ever written. Artist Eddie Campbell exhaustively researched period London for the story of Jack the Ripper, down to the point of correctly noting inscriptions on buildings, and demanding re-writes to the story because characters walked over a bridge that had yet to be built. It's an exploration of a place, a time, and why this shadowy figure has loomed in the public's subconscious ever since. Be warned: As should be expected for a story about Jack the Ripper, this book contains high levels of violence, sex, and other adult themes.
"We're in the most extreme and utter region of the human mind, a dim sub-conscious underworld. A radiant abyss where men meet themselves..."
From Hell, by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell.

About the book:

From Hell is the story of Jack the Ripper, perhaps the most infamous man in the annals of murder. Detailing the events leading up to the Whitechapel killings and the cover-up that followed, From Hell is a meditation on the mind of a madman whose savagery and violence gave birth to the 20th century ... Often regarded as one of the most significant graphic novels ever published, From Hell combines meticulous research with educated speculation, resulting in a masterpiece of historical fiction both compelling and terrifying. — From the publisher

About the authors:

Alan Oswald Moore (born 18 November 1953) is an English writer primarily known for his work in comic books, a medium where he has produced a number of critically acclaimed and popular series, including Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and From Hell. Frequently described as the best graphic novel writer in history, he has also been described as "one of the most important British writers of the last fifty years". He has occasionally used such pseudonyms as Curt Vile, Jill de Ray, and Translucia Baboon.  — From Wikipedia

Eddie Campbell (born 10 August 1955) is a Scottish comics artist and cartoonist who now lives in Australia. Probably best known as the illustrator and publisher of From Hell (written by Alan Moore), Campbell is also the creator of the semi-autobiographical Alec stories collected in Alec: The Years Have Pants, and Bacchus (aka Deadface), a wry adventure series about the few Greek gods who have survived to the present day. His graphic novel The Lovely Horrible Stuff, which playfully investigates our relationship with money, was published in July 2012 by Top Shelf Productions. — From Wikipedia

"It landed lightly. Rincewind saw its lid open again, slightly. Just far enough for a tongue, large as a palm leaf, red as mahogany, to lick up a few errant feathers". - The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett
